Diagnostics

At BrightSpot Energy Solutions, we are committed to improving the comfort of your home, reducing your energy consumption, and helping you become more energy independent.

Our goal is to help each homeowner expand the health and comfort investments they make in their home, at the lowest cost possible.  To help get you started, we offer a series of diagnostic tests to identify where your home may be losing energy (and dollars).  Only after identifying where the problems are, can we intelligently suggest cost-effective strategies to combat the issue.

Why do it this way?  An example is best.  We could recommend you invest $25,000 in solar energy to decrease your energy costs.  However, if the issue is loss of cool air through inadequately sealed windows, you will still be losing the same amount of air.  Sealing those windows will cost a lot less than $25,000 and address the REAL problem, rather than placing a very expensive band-aid over it.

Diagnostic Tests Available

Using cutting edge technology, BrightSpot Energy will come to your home and assess what underlying problems your home may have that contributes to energy loss, and your family feeling less than comfortable.  Some of the tests we offer include:

  • Thermal Image Photography.
  • HVAC Air Flow and Temperature Test, including Leak Detection
  • Home Envelope Leak Detection
  • Home Moisture and Water Damage Check
  • Envelope Air Pressure Test
  • Lifestyle Energy Waste Evaluation
  • Blower Door Test

A combination of tests is highly effective in most cases.

Blower Door Test

Having a Blower Door test for your home could be one of the best investments you make, and though the process is not well known, there are several benefits of having one done. When it comes to energy efficiency, the blower door test can tell you a lot about what is going on in your structure.

To simply explain the process, a huge fan is installed on your front or back door in a temporary frame and canvas structure. A digital meter is hooked to the fan and the fan is turned on. What the fan will do is suck a large volume of air from the structure and thus depressurize the home.  As the air is leaving the building, it will draw air from outside through any leaks in the structure like penetrations and unsealed walls, doors and perhaps windows. If there is a temperature difference between outside and inside the home, a thermal image can easily show the source of the air leaks. Some tests are done with a non-toxic smoke to show air movement.

There are different pressure zones in a home and the blower door can test these zones to find out where the worst leaks are located by doing a pressure test in each room. This is great, especially if you have that one uncomfortable room no one likes to go in.

Another benefit of the Blower Door test is that it will calculate if your home is sealed too tight. This is important to know because if your home is not breathing properly, it may become a breeding ground for mold. Warm air carries a lot of moisture. In the winter if there is not enough air exchange between the outside and the air in your home, it can create condensation which is a precursor to the mold problem.

If you are losing costly energy or think your home may not be breathing adequately, take the guesswork out of the equation and have a Blower Door test performed. It may save you a lot of money in the long run and pinpoint many causes to your homes’ mysteries.
